Unlike oil, ethanol can be produced virtually anywhere, and fuel ethanol is being produced all over the world. Today, the Americas have built up a dominant position in fuel ethanol production. In 2006, the US surpassed Brazil to become the world's largest producer of ethanol. Current US capacity is around 35 billion liters, while Brazil produces around 25 billion liters. Europe is only a small player at present, with installed capacity of approximately 3 billion liters. China and other Asian countries are now also making very serious efforts in production as well.
